Pecos County's three high schools may not have sent many student athletes to the 2019 state championship track and field meet, but those that went made their presence known.
• Buena Vista High School's boys 4x400 relay team claimed a state 1A championship. The team featured Valentino “Tino” Martinez, Byram Caballero, Lalo Gardea and Josh Rodriguez. It was a big jump for the team, which had placed second at the 1A-Region 1 meet. Caballero also took fourth at state in the 800. He had won the championship at the regional meet.
• Fort Stockton High School's Pedro Vasquezearned a bronze medal in the 4A boys 400-meter dash. He had entered the meet with the 7th-fastest time among the 16 finalists. He was the 4A-Region 1 champion.
